Overview
The Bachelor of Social Work from Booth University College can be completed in:
- 4 years (120 credits)
- We also offer a 2-year After-Degree Program
Social work is a challenging and rewarding profession. Our program will prepare you to overcome challenges and facilitate change. We continuously seek input from professionals in the field to ensure our curriculum reflects the current realities of practice.
We combine theory with experiential learning. Assignments are grounded in current theories, and simulate real-world expectations. Small class sizes allow for more advanced learning opportunities, because instructors can devote time to your learning and evaluation. You’ll learn from faculty who have extensive experience in social work.
Social work is a broad field. From the start, you’ll be encouraged to share your interests and engage in conversations that help you explore areas of practice that are most exciting for you.

Practicum Experience
During your time in the program, expect to gain at least 700 hours of practical field experience. When you graduate, you’ll be prepared for practice in a variety of settings. Our emphasis on practical learning makes our graduates highly sought. Many are offered employment from their practicum placements. We have a unique approach to practicum placement. Our faculty are liaisons for all placements. Our field education coordinator works with you to find experiences that align with your passions and career goals.
Accreditation
Our social work program is a well-respected and sought-after program in Manitoba. We are an approved program with the Manitoba College of Social Workers (MCSW). Our graduates qualify to complete the Associated Social Work Boards Practice Exam to become a Registered Social Worker in Manitoba. Our success in preparing students for this exam has placed Booth University College in the top spot for completion rates in Canada.
Although we are not accredited by the Canadian Association of Social Work Educators (CASWE), many of our graduates have gone on to register as social workers and practice across Canada.

What You'll Learn
Here’s what you can expect to learn in this program, in addition to our Institutional Learning Outcomes:
- Identification as a professional social worker and use of self.
- Adherence to the Social Work Code of Ethics and adoption of social work values in professional practice.
- Professional social work practice skills with individuals, families, groups, communities and organizations, applying knowledge of human behaviour and the social environment.
- Identification of structural sources of oppression and inequity, and promotion of human rights and social justice at all client system levels.
- Employment of critical thinking in professional practice.
- Engage in social work research.
- Engage in policy analysis and development to advance social and economic well-being and deliver effective social work services.

Your Future
A career in social work offers many possibilities. You’ll help people affected by issues such as addictions, mental illness, disabilities, poverty, homelessness, unemployment, violence, trauma, health issues or crime. Diverse roles include advocate, counsellor, facilitator, mediator, case manager, or policy analyst.

Admission Requirements
- 5 credits (courses) at the grade 12 level (Manitoba high school 40 A, S, C, G, U, or equivalent)
- At least 80% average in: English 40S and two other 40S credits from different subject areas
- English Proficiency
- Resume, Personal Statement, and Letters of Reference
- Transfer students: 21 credit hours, minimum 2.5 CGPA
- Current Booth UC students: 21 credit hours, minimum 2.5 CGPA, including minimum C+ in SWK110 Introduction to Social Work
Resume: Describe your previous education, work, and volunteer experience.
- Identify which of your work and volunteer experiences are related to social or human services.
- Note the number of hours at each employment and volunteer experience.
Personal Statement: In 4-5 pages (reflection based style, double spaced) answer these questions:
- Why do you want to be a Social Worker?
- What does social justice mean to you? Include a social problem you’re passionate about and how you would respond to it.
Letters of Reference: Provide an academic reference and a work or volunteer reference. Include contact information for you references in your application form. To submit letters of reference, use the online reference request form in your populi application.
- Academic References: If you are a current Booth UC student, the academic reference must come from a faculty member at Booth UC who has taught you.
- Work or Volunteer References: References can be work or volunteer supervisors, practicum supervisors, or relevant professionals. They must be qualified to speak to your suitability and potential for studies in social work.
